What dermal fillers are
Dermal fillers are non-surgical, injectable treatments used to support facial volume and structure where clinically appropriate. Many commonly used fillers are based on hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the body, and are temporary in effect.
The degree and timing of any change varies depending on the individual, the product used, and the area treated. Outcomes are not guaranteed.
Common side effects can include swelling, bruising, tenderness, and temporary unevenness. The time taken to return to usual activities varies between individuals and should not be assumed to be immediate.
Common treatment areas
Dermal fillers may be discussed for areas such as the lips, cheeks, and other facial regions, depending on your presentation and goals. Some areas require more advanced assessment and are not suitable for every individual.
Your consultation focuses on facial balance, tissue quality, and what can be achieved safely and appropriately.
Needle and cannula
Where treatment is clinically appropriate, dermal fillers may be administered using a needle or a cannula. A cannula may be associated with reduced bruising in some cases; however, technique and product selection are determined following individual assessment.
Both approaches are considered as part of a tailored treatment plan. Our clinical team has completed accredited advanced training, including cannula techniques.
Planning and consent
We describe dermal fillers in general terms, including expected duration ranges, limitations, and potential risks. All treatment decisions are made following a detailed discussion of your medical history, expectations, and suitability.
Nothing proceeds without your informed consent.
This includes understanding rare but serious complications, such as vascular compromise, which requires urgent medical management.
When treatment may not proceed
We may advise against or defer treatment in certain situations, including:
- Active skin infection or inflammation
- Certain medical conditions
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding (where products are not indicated)
- Unrealistic expectations
- Where proposed treatment is not supported by your anatomy
A consultation does not guarantee that treatment will be offered or carried out.
Injectable treatments carry risks, and individual response varies. This information is provided for general guidance only and does not replace a face-to-face consultation.
